The New International Encyclopædia/Nictheroy

NICTHEROY, nēk'tắroi'. A town of Brazil, in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It is situated on the east side of the entrance to the bay, opposite the city of Rio de Janeiro (Map: Brazil, J 8). The town is not attractive, but it is surrounded by delightful suburbs, where the residences of the wealthy classes are situated. Prior to 1894 Nictheroy was the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The population was estimated in 1898 at 26,000.
