Extracted from Popular magazine, 26 Feb 1917, pp. 1–72. Chapters VIII and subsequent chapters were wrongly named Chapter IX, etc. They have been renamed. Incidentally, the cover of this magazine featured George Washington. Perhaps just a coincidence, but the story of "I cannot tell a lie" is now held to be just that—a story (and a whopper at that.)
