The Encyclopedia Americana (1920)/Abba Mari

ABBA MARI, mä′ri (correctly Abba Mari ben Moses ben Joseph don Astruc of Lunel), a French Hebrew who achieved fame as leader of the opposition to the growing rationalism of Maimonides, in the Montpellier controversy of 1306–06. He was born at Lunel near Montpellier, but the dates of his birth and death are unknown. His correspondence with Solomon ben Adret, rabbi of Barcelona, published under the title of ‘Minhat Kenaot – Jealousy Offering,’ accentuates the three cardinal doctrines of orthodox Judaism, and throws much light on the question of the relation of religion to the philosophy of the age.
