ABBATE, äb–ä′te, or ABATI, ä–bä′tē, Nicolo, nē′kō–lō, Italian painter, follower of Raphael and Corregio: b. 1512 at Modena, where his earlier works are exhibited; d. 1571 at Fontainebleau – his frescoes in which palace are his best-known productions. His finest piece, however, is regarded as ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds,’ at Bologna, where his later work mostly exists. He has another in the Dresden gallery.
