BENDA, Georg, German musician, the most distinguished of a notable musical family: b. Jungbunzlau, Bohemia, 1721; d. Köstriz 1795. He was bandmaster to the Duke of Gotha (1748-87), and in this period produced several operas and cantatas, such as ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ and ‘Medea.’
