TAUSSIG, tows'ĭg, Edward David, American naval officer: b. Saint Louis, Mo., 20 Nov. 1847. On graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1867, he was appointed successively ensign, master and lieutenant, being made lieutenant-commander 19 June 1892. He has served on the European and Pacific stations and in the coast survey. He took possession of Wake Island for the United States and was placed in charge of Guam 1 Feb. 1899. He was on duty in the Philippines and during the summer of 1900 in North China. He has commanded the Bennington and the Yorktown.
