Elles; b. 1848; educ; R.M.A., Woolwich; entered Royal Artillery 1867 , served in the Lushai, Hazara and other expeditions and gained distinctions; captain, 1878; Major, 1884; D.A.Q.M.G. Bengal, 1883-85; A.Q.M.G. for Intelligence, Bengal, 1886-89; D.G.M.G.
