Pitman, Charles Edward, C.I.E. (1880), F.R.G.S., Indian Telegraph Department (retired); o.s. of late Captain Pitman; b. in Plymouth, 1845; educ: Royal Naval School; joined the Indian Telegraph Department, 1868; worked in the Lushi Expedition (despatches medal and clasps), 1871-72; sent on a mission to Kerlat. 1876; employed in Beluchistan, 1877-78; present in Afghan War, 1878-80; m. Lucy Madeede, d. of late Cargill, 1888: present at Khandahar (despatches and Medal and 4 clasps); Director-General of Telegraphs, India, 1899; retired, 1900. Address: Drewton, Chelston, Torquay Club: Junior Constitutional; Devon and Exter.
