Stuart, John, Managing Proprietor, “Rangoon Gazette”; b. Bombay, 1847; s. of John Stuart, formerly of the Bank of Bombay, educ: Bath, Edinburgh; Melbourne; was for a year on a Sheep station in Australia; returned to Scotland; attended the Edinburgh University for one session only; received business training in the Commercial Bank of Scotland, Glasgow, and in an East India Merchant’s Office, London; proceeded to Rangoon and joined business in a firm, 1870; deputed by the merchants of Rangoon to Bhamo on the Chinese Frontier to test the possibility of increasing trade with Western China, 1870; Secretary, Burma Chamber of Commerce, 1892-93; joined the “Rangoon Gazette” as leader-writer, 1883; obtained a share in business, 1890; eventually became its Managing Proprietor; represented Burma in the Imperial Press Conference, 1900.
