Thibaut, George Frederick William, Ph.D., C.I.E., (1906); Carmichaol Professor of Ancient Indian History and Culture, Calcutta University: s. of Karl Thibaut, Librarian of the Heidelberg University; b. at Heidelberg, 1848; educ: at the Gymnasium, Heidelberg and Berlin; proceeded to England, 1871; was Assistant to late Professor Max Müller in the preparation of the Rig Veda; joined the Indian Educational Department as Professor of Anglo-Sanskrit, Banares College, 1875; Principal of the College, 1879-88; joined the Muir Central College, Allahabad, as Professor, 1888-95; became its Principal, 1895; was Superintendent of Sanskrit studies in the United Provinces; retired from Government service, 1906; Registrar, Calcutta University, 1907.
