CO′HOSH. The American Indian name of black snakeroot (Cimicifuga racemosa). It occurs in the United States from Maine to Wisconsin and south to Florida. The rhizomes, which are employed in medicine, contain resin, wax, tannin, and a crystalline principle. Alterative, sedative, and emmenagogue properties are attributed to it.
