WELLS. A city in Somersetshire, England, pleasantly situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills, 15 miles southwest of Bath (Map: England, D 5). The cathedral dates from the first half of the thirteenth century, and is for the most part in Early English: its west front, one of the noblest façades in the kingdom, enriched with 300 statues, is in Gothic. One of the most important of Wessex towns in Saxon times. Wells was created a see in 905. Population, in 1891, 4822; in 1901, 4849.
