Ægean (ē-jē′ăn) Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean between Greece and Asia Minor, is now called the Grecian Archipelago. One fable traces its name to Ægeas, king of Athens, who threw himself into its waters. It is over 400 miles in length, with an average breadth of 200 miles. It is studded with islands, many of which have played an important part in Grecian history.
