Augsberg, an old and important city of Germany, in Bavaria, is on the River Lech. A colony was planted here in 12 B. C. by the Emperor Augustus. It became a free city of the empire in 1276. Holbein was a native of this city. It has many large manufactories, and is one of the main money markets ot Europe. Population, 102,293.
