Burgoyne (bûr-goin′), John, an English general during the American Revolution. His surrender to the Americans, Oct. 7, 1777, at Saratoga, (q. v.) was one of the most important victories of the war. Entering the army as a subordinate he had risen by distinguished service in Portugal before being sent to America. On returning to England he wrote an account of his American campaign in his own defense, throwing the blame for his failure on the British cabinet. He also wrote several dramas. He died at London in 1792.
