Rio Gran′de, a large river of North America, rises in San Juan Mountains in Colorado and flows southeastward, forming the boundary between Texas and Mexico, its length being about 1,800 miles. For the most part it is a shallow stream, but steamboats can ascend it for nearly 500 miles. Its chief tributary is the Rio Pecos.
