DELANY, Rev. William, S.J., LL.D. (R.U.I.); b. 1835. Educ: Carlow College; Maynooth College; Gregorian University, Rome. Entered the Society of Jesus at St. Acheul, near Amiens, 1856; taught classics and mathematics in Clongowes and Tullabeg Colleges, 1858-65; studied in Rome, 1865-68: Priest, 1866; Chaplain to Irish Zouaves in Rome, 1867: returned to Tullabeg College, 1868; Prefect of Studies, Tullabeg, 1868-70; Rector, 1870-80; travelled in Canada and the United States, 1831; Rector, St. Ignatius' College, Dublin, 1882-83; President, Catholic University College, Dublin, 1883-88; Missionary Work in Jesuit Church, Dublin, 1888-97: again President of University College, Dublin, 1897-1909; Provincial in Ireland, 1909-1912; Senator of the Royal University, 1885-1909; Senator of the National University, 1909-1919; and Member of the Governing Body of the Dublin University College. 1908: gave evidence before the Royal Commissions on University Education in Ireland.
