O'BRIEN, Dermod, D.L. Co. Limerick; President Royal Hibernian Academy; President Board of Visitors to National Museum, Ireland; Governor and Guardian National Gallery, Ireland. Educ.: Harrow; Trinity College, Cambridge; Antwerp, Paris, and Slade; went to Rome, 1887, and started art education at Antwerp, 1887 (silver medal); Paris, Julian's Studio, 1890; settled in London, Trafalgar Studios, Chelsea, 1893, and moved to Dublin, 1901. Has exhibited at R A. New Gallery, New English, Liverpool. &c., A.R.H.A., 1905; R.H.A., 1907; P.R.H.A., 1910; Hon. R.A., 1911; Hon. R.S.A., 1912. Portrait and Landscape painter; landowner and farmer and D.L. Co. Limerick; served on Vice-Regal Milk Commission, Ireland, and Milk Distribution Committee, England, 1915-16; organised an Irish Conference Committee from which came the Irish Convention; on Committee of Irish Dominion League, Proportional Representation for Ireland, Co-operative Organisation, &c.; Art lectures, &c. Rec.: painting; b. 10th June. 1865; eldest son of E. W. O'Brien, of Cahirmoyle, Co Limerick; m. 1902, Mabel, 2nd dau. of Sir Philip Smyly, and has issue three sons and two daus.
