Educ.: at home by his father; Louvain Academy of Fine Arts. 1865-70; under Portaels in Brussels, 1872-74: studied at Dresden, 1867; visited Paris, 1869; first exhibited Royal Academy, Burlington House, 1875, visited Australia, 1879-80; served as Art Master at the People's Palace, Mile-End Road, 1897; Member Union International des Beaux-Arts and United Irish League. Pubs, and Works: Guilty or Not Guilty; Queen's Annual Gifts to the Poor; Australia v. England, 1887 (painted in conjunction with the late G. H. Barrable); The Emperor's Farewell: The Dying Emperor Wilhelm I., 1888: The Last Shot for the Queen's Prize—Wimbledon, 1887; Cardinal Manning's Last Reception (presented to Cardinal Vaughan by the Roman Catholics of England): Mr. Gladstone introducing the Home Rule Bill, 13th Feb., 1893; Mr. Labouchere; Earl Roberts, V.C. (purchased by King Edward); The Queen and King Edward VII.; Dawn on the Matoppos; Lion guarding Cecil Rhodes' Grave; two Triptychs, illustrating Shipbuilding, for New City Hall, Belfast; Irish Political Cartoons; third son of late Sir Nathaniel Staples, 10th Bart, and heir-presumptive to Sir J. M. Staples, 11th Bart.; b. 30th June, 1853; m. 1883, Ada Louisa, dau. of H. Stammers, of London, and has issue one son and three daus. Res.: Lissan House, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone.
