This poem was first published in Poems on Several Occasions (1770), a collection of poems by Michael Bruce. The collection was edited by Logan, who added poems by other authors, writing that "The reader of taste will easily distinguish them from those of Mr Bruce, without their being particularized by any mark." Logan later included "Ode to the Cuckoo" in Poems (1781), a collection of his own works; some scholars, however, credit Bruce with the authorship of the poem.
