"You see that star up there",
One astronomer said to me,
"Your brain stops, when you think
How far that star is.

"It is far, it is high, —
A hundred long years pass
Before a ray of its light
Reaches to our eyes."

"We see this star,
We see how it twinkles,
But maybe it has long been gone,
— Do you believe it? — I believe you!

For to me, too, it seems,
Standing in the middle of the night,
As if I hear sweet voices,
As if I hear tender words.

It seems to me as if I see
The bright face of my star;
I see her, I see her,
— But she is long gone...
