Смрти, смрти, црна смрти,
Ти си дошла по њу, — је ли?
Не пресеци, Бога ради,
Везу нашу! — А смрт вели:

„Ја разумем твоју стрепњу, —
Пресекла сам везу многу;
Ваша ј’ веза тако јака,
Пресећи је ја не могу.“

„Само ћу јој — то ми с’ може —
Друго име сада дати,
Досада се љубав звала,
— Отсад ће се тугом звати.“

Faded Rose XXXIV

O death, death, black death,
You have come for her, — have you?
Do not sever, for God's sake,
Our bond! — But death says:

"I understand your worry, —
I have severed many bonds;
Your bond is so strong
That I cannot sever it."

"I will only — this I can do —
Give it a different name,
Until now it has been called love,
— Henceforth it will be called sorrow."
