Text[edit]

And these are the generations of Isaac, son of Abraham: Abraham begot Isaac.

Rashi[edit]

And these are the generations of Isaac

Jacob and Esau who are said in the parashah.

Abraham begot Isaac

After The Holy One, blessed is He, named him Abraham, after that he begot Isaac. Another thing: Since the scripture wrote: "Isaac, son of Abraham", it had to say: "Abraham begot Isaac", because the insulters of the generation were saying: From Abimelech Sarah conceived, for how many years she stayed with Abraham and did not conceive from him. What did The Holy One, blessed is He, do? He Shaped the countenance of the face of Isaac like Abraham, and all testified: "Abraham begot Isaac". And this is what he wrote here: Isaac was the son of Abraham, for there is testimony that Abraham begot Isaac.

And the proof: For he said: "And he sent them away from upon Isaac, his son" (Genesis 25:6).

Abraham begot Isaac

The language of Rashi: Since it is written: "Isaac, son of Abraham", it had to say: "Abraham begot Isaac", because the insulters of the generation were saying: From Abimelech Sarah conceived. Therefore The Holy One, blessed is He Shaped the countenance of the face of Isaac like Abraham, that all should say: "Abraham begot Isaac". And Rabbi Abraham said further that the meaning of begot: raised and brought up, like "were brought up upon the knees of Joseph", like he said: "And he sent them away from upon Isaac, his son". And was is correct in my eyes is that he returned now and began with the father of the lineage, as the custom of the scripture to return by the men of degree to the head of the lineage. And so in Chronicles (1 1:17-18) it is written: ...
