What did they do with the offerings (terumah) [of the half-shekel]? They bought the daily offerings, the additional offerings [for Sabbaths, Festivals and the New Moon], their libations, the omer, the two loaves of presentation bread, and all communal offerings. Those who watched the aftergrowth of the Sabbatical year were paid from the Temple treasury. Rabbi Yosé says, "One who wishes to do so may volunteer to watch [the aftergrowth] without payment." They said to him, "Then you admit that [the omer] may not be offered except from communal funds."
