Paragraph 1- How does one marry with a document? He writes for her on paper or pottery, even if not worth a perutah, “you shall be married to me,” and he gives it to her in the presence of witnesses. He must write the document on behalf of the woman he is marrying just as is required by a get. If he does not write it for her, she would not be married. He may only write it with her consent. If he wrote it without her consent, the marriage is uncertain.

Paragraph 2- Even if a document has been disqualified from using to marry, we would appraise the paper. If it is worth a perutah, she would be married. If not, her marriage would be uncertain.

Paragraph 3- If the girl was a minor or under 12.5 years old and her father married her off with a document, the husband would write, “your daughter shall be married to me.”

Paragraph 4- There are those who say the marriage document must mention the names of the man and woman just as is required in a divorce document. If the document was written on something attached to the ground or something in which one is prohibited to derive benefit from, there are those who say the document is invalid, while others say it is valid. No date is required in a marriage document. If the document was written in the husband’s writing and had no witnesses, the marriage would be uncertain. If the man gave a woman a document and told her it is condition that he gets to retain he paper, she would not be married.
