Kinah 1 - זכור ה' מה היה לנו

[edit]

Remember, oh Lord, what has befallen us - alas!
Look and see our shame

Alas, what has befallen us.

Our heritage has gone over to strangers - alas!
Our homes to foreigners

Alas, what has befallen us.

We have become orphans with no father - alas!
Our mothers mourn in the month of Av

Alas, what has befallen us.

We weighed out silver for water - alas!
Because we neglected the water libation

Alas, what has befallen us.

We were pursued for our lives - alas!
Because we pursued baseless hatred

Alas, what has befallen us.

Egypt gave a hand [to destroy us] - alas!
And Assyria lay in wait for us like a hunter

Alas, what has befallen us.

Our fathers sinned and are gone - alas!
And we suffer for their sins

Alas, what has befallen us.

Slaves have ruled over us - alas!
Because we neglected to free our servants

Alas, what has befallen us.

We risk our lives for bread - alas!
Because we have withdrawn our hand from the poor

Alas, what has befallen us.

Our skin has shriveled as from an oven - alas!
Because our honor has been exchanged for disgrace

Alas, what has befallen us.

Women have been violated in Zion - alas!
Because men have defiled their neighbors’ wives

Alas, what has befallen us.

Princes have been hanged by the enemy - alas!
Because they have robbed and extorted the poor

Alas, what has befallen us.

Young men have been burdened with millstones - alas!
Because they have frequented the brothels

Alas, what has befallen us.

Elders have been removed from the gates - alas!
Because they have twisted the judgment of the widow and the orphan

Alas, what has befallen us.

The joy of our hearts has ceased - alas!
Because our pilgrims have stopped their pilgrimages

Alas, what has befallen us.

The crown has fallen from our heads - alas!
Because our Temple has been burned

Alas, what has befallen us.

For this our hearts have mourned - alas!
For the honor of the house of our desire

Alas, what has befallen us.

For Mount Zion which lies in ruin - alas!
Because the abomination of desolation has been placed upon it

Alas, what has befallen us.

You, oh Lord, reign forever
Your throne endures from generation to generation.
Will You forever forget us, abandon us for many days?
Return us to You, oh Lord, and we will return
Renew our days as of old.
You cannot have utterly rejected us
And be entirely incensed against us.
Return us to You, oh Lord, and we will return
Renew our days as of old.

Kinah 2 - איך מפי בן ובת

[edit]

How from the mouth of son and daughter
Many lamentations pour forth
In place of songs and rejoicing

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.

Alas for a decree has been enacted
With fury and with rage
And His anger flares against us
And His fury burns like flame

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.

Alas for our homes have been wrecked
And our virgins violated
And our countenances have changed
And darkened like a [burnt] pan

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.

Alas for our enemies have pillaged us
And laid down corpses among us
The dear children of Zion
Who were guarded like the apple of an eye

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.

Alas for the crown has fallen
And the rebellious ones have triumphed
And glory and splendor have ended
The Divine presence has shrunk from the Temple

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.

Alas for the menorah is taken
And incense and the pure frankincense
And the hewn stones have been scorned
The land that flowed [with milk and honey] has been consumed

And pleasantness has ceased at the Sabbath’s end.
