INSCRIPTION FOR A DOOR-KNOCKER
ON TENTH STREET

THERE are some critics
(Said the Old Mandarin, sipping a petit verre)
Who remind me of a gong at a grade crossing
Clanging loudly and vainly
As the train roars by.
