Chap. III.—An Act authorizing the President of the United States to cause to be built or purchased the vessels therein described.[1]

Vessels to be built.Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That in addition to the present naval establishment, the President of the United States be, and he is hereby authorized to cause to be built or purchased, manned, equipped and officered, any number of vessels, not exceeding twenty, which in his opinion, the public service may require, to carry not less than eight, nor more than sixteen guns, each.

Appropriation.Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That for the building, or purchase, and equipping of these vessels, the sum of six hundred thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby appropriated, to be paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated.
