Chap. XXIII.An Act to provide for repairing the Potomac Bridge.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,Appropriation. That the sum of fifteen thousand eight hundred and six dollars be, and the same is hereby, appropriated, in addition to the sums heretofore appropriated and unexpended, for the repair of the Potomac bridge in the District of Columbia, to be paid out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.

How to be expended.Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the said sums shall be expended under the direction of the Secretary of War, in the following manner, to wit: He shall designate some competent officer of the Engineer corps to draw plans and make specifications of the work to be performed, and estimated of the cost or value thereof, which shall not exceed the sum of forty-five thousand eight hundred and six dollars; the officer thus selected, shall lay his plans, specifications, and estimates before the Secretary of War for his approval, and the said Secretary shall thereupon cause the work to be constructed upon the plan most approved by him, under the immediate superintendence of some competent officer of either Engineer corps, who shall make all necessary contracts for materials and labor, and cause the work to be constructed in the best and most substantial manner within the estimates and according to the plan approved by the Secretary of War, and under the orders and general direction of said Secretary, who will, from time to time, cause such advances of the amounts for this object appropriated as he may deem necessary and proper.

Appropriation therefor.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the timbers, or such of them as the superintending engineer may think fit, shall be mineralized, and a sum not exceeding three and a half cents per cubic foot is hereby appropriated out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to defray the expense and cost thereof, the proper amount to be paid on the requisition of the Secretary of War, founded on the estimate of the superintendent.
