This will eventually become a Style Manual (and other notes) for proofreading and editing Wikisource:WikiProject Ackermann’s Repository of Arts and Index:Repository of Arts, Series 1, Volume 01, 1809, January-June.djvu. Much of it is a list of items with formatting to copy/paste (click on Edit at the top of the page/section to access the code to copy/paste). See my user page (link above) and my talk page for more general discussions.

TASKS[edit]

  • Add missing and fix all plate headers and footers (referencing Bunka Gakuen images where djvu images are overcropped). Decide whether footers should go within image display template (probably, yes) and fix all to make them consistent.
  • find/make decisions about higher resolution (and/or better focused) plate images from Bunka Gakuen or elsewhere; upload as appropriate.
  • add section markers for transclusion
  • edit TOC pages for article title links
  • create mainspace pages
    • decide whether to use issue-level TOC or Volume level (repeat mastheads? create specialized TOC table and/or template?)
    • investigate if it's possible to transclude serialized articles to a single page (and recurring articles, like music and fashion), probably at Volume level
  • create links from relevant wikipedia articles to main namespace pages, e.g., create link in w:Joseph Wölfl to review at Page:Repository of Arts, Series 1, Volume 01, 1809, January-June.djvu/226 (incidentally correcting date of publication to 1809). Add link from (pagespace) review to Wölfl's article on wp. Add external links to IMSLP.

Alternate printings[edit]

Bunka Gakuen’s bound copies are a different printing from the set at IA. The page numbers are the same, but there are occasional differences in the text. The BG set is probably a later printing, as most of the textual differences appear to be corrections. However, since the IA printings are the ones on Commons, their version should prevail. Use {{SIC}} to indicate corrections.

To access the BG images:

  • click on the link above
  • click on the Search button at top right, type "repository" in the keyword box, and press the Search button at the bottom (Enter won't work)
  • click the link for "The repository of arts"

OR

  • click on "Magazines" at lower left
  • click on "R" (for "Repository")
  • click the link for "The repository of arts"

For Volume I, the BG printing places all of the advertisements at the end, after the Index.

Index: (229-0001-) 311 through 315. Advertisements:

  • Jan 315
  • Feb 317
  • Mar 319
  • Apr 321
  • May 325
  • Jun 329-333

Vol. II: Index: (229-0002-) 336 through 338 (670-672). Advertisements:

  • Jul 338/672
  • Aug (none?)
  • Sep 342/676
  • Oct 344/678
  • Nov 346/680
  • Dec 349/683

p. 459 (301/635) goes next to p. 480 (302/636) so 20 pages are missing or placed elsewhere.

Style notes[edit]

Deviations from the main Wikisource:Style guide[edit]

  • Use “paired quotation marks” or “curly quotation marks,” which can be accessed from the Symbols dropdown on the editing toolbar. Also ‘single but paired quotation marks’ and curly apostrophes. You can add a toolbar button that converts all of the quotation marks, apostrophes, and twin-hyphens on the page to their curly or dashy forms with a single click. To use it, add the following line to your common.js: importScript('User:Samwilson/CurlyQuotes.js');
  • For ellipses, use ". . .” (periods/stops with spaces in between) instead of "...” (no spaces) or "…" (character).
  • Use {{bar|2}} instead of emdashes. (Considered longdashes but they do not work on ereaders.) Note: The display of "bar" on my monitor has changed for me since I started this, probably due to my idiosyncratic color/low vision needs. Now it looks like a double thick/thin bar, but this might be because my colors are reversed and I'm seeing a white "background." So if it's not because my colors are reversed, I may need to come up with a good workaround for this. Need something that is longer than an emdash but will work on ereaders. Or is my ereader just too old and longdashes work properly on modern ereaders? I am very strongly opposed to emdashes both because they are too short to be functional (opinionated diatribe omitted) and because I want to approximate the formatting of the original publication. Requires research (again) into types of lines available and how to code them.
  • Preserve all spelling and punctuation as on the page. Use {{sic}} and {{SIC}} as appropriate (the latter to mark actual printer errors, the former for everything else).

Annotations[edit]

According to the proposed policy guide Wikisource:Wikilinks:

With older works, wikilinks may be more appropriate, whether those works are fictional, scholarly or any other type of text. In these cases, wikilinks are useful for understanding what the author is saying. Cultural references that would have been well known to the contemporary audience can be obscure to modern readers. Authors of older works may also assume that their readers have studied Latin and Greek, which is less likely to be true now. Situations like this can make wikilinks more acceptable than normal.

Bearing this in mind, feel free to include wikilinks to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, linking directly within the text, or basic explanations or translations within a {{SIC}} or {{Tooltip}} note. However, be aware that the proposed policy guide Wikisource:Annotations does not allow interpretive annotations.

Examples:

  • Bishop’s music to the forthcoming opera at Drury-lane Theatre. . . .

Page headers[edit]

Notes: For printed pages, Bunka Gakuen images at 100%:

  • Printed article text for some articles is 6mm high, but for others is 5mm high.
  • Printed page-header small caps, and those non-header small caps used within article text, are 4mm high.
  • Printed within-article header small caps are 4mm or 3mm high, depending on the size of normal text.
  • Printed article titles in full caps are 6mm or 5mm high.

In wiki-code, when browser is zoomed to where small caps are 4mm high:

  • Small caps are 78% of normal size.
  • “smaller” is 83%.
  • “x-smaller” is 69%.
