Here I work on UK Law, as well as law in general. Currently, I'm working on locating and making public domain requests for yearly/session compiled laws for english speaking jurisdictions. I intend to understand a particular jurisdiction's organizational system for it's compiled law books and then upload the complete set to Commons, Wikidata, and of course here. Hopefully this project makes historical law more accessible and covers gaps where various legislatures have not digitized existing in force laws, particularly in common law jurisdictions. If you know a good resource where a large number of a particular jurisdiction's compiled law books are available in PDF form, either already available or awaiting public domain/freedom of information request, please let me know!

Tasks

[edit]
  • Update legislation list tables to standardized, useful format (see Portal:Acts of Senedd Cymru for example)
    • Wales and Scotland Done! NI, and UK (Charles III done, back to 1992 PGA on Eliz II) needed.
    • Create the lists in the first place for SRO and SIs
      • Going to be difficult, current method involves downloading and restructuring the search results CSV files, which only allow for 20 results per file. Fine when there are 60 or so acts per year, not feasable when there are 3500 SIs (2014 would take 175 files for only the UKSIs, not including devolved instruments), may need to explore some automation.
  • Attribute existing individual files on Commons (uploaded by Fae) to index pages for proofreading
  • Upload missing files to Commons (mainly 2022-Present for all jurisdictions), and upload King's Printer version when only revised version is present
  • Discover all online scans of each compiled law book (Portal:Collated Volumes of Primary Legislation of the United Kingdom) and then do a mass reorg of the files on Commons and organize them by version
  • Actually proofread things _-_
    • Determine the best course of action for Welsh (and Irish) dual language legislation (See Wikisource:Multilingual texts, Welsh likely using Template:Bilingual, Irish sometimes also use Template:Interlinear translation)
      • For situations like Welsh, where pages are published one after the other in folio, transclude English pages here and other language pages on other wikisource (Cymraeg is accepting of our imperfect proofreading)
  • Stretch UK goal: Correction Slips and Explanatory Notes where present
  • Maybe deal with Canadian and US stuff
    • Canada first, much easier

  • General Acts - See Portal:Collated Volumes of Primary Legislation of the United Kingdom, lots of work to be done regarding differing print editions of General acts, Wikisource currently does have at least 1 scan of each year 1801-1973, but its a mix, sometimes problematically, of various print editions. Ultimately, it shouldn't matter which edition is transcluded into individual act pages, they're all done by the King's printer, but the different print runs need to be separated from each other within Commons and Wikidata as well.
  • Local and Personal Acts - Random US law school slip law compilations have been requested, need to ensure they're correctly in the table. Official king's printer books are available from the Oireachtas, but are incredibly large in size and arduous to download. May need to do some testing to ensure these don't hit backend issues in transcription like the large file Statues of the Realm. Could possibly downsize the scans as long as it doesn't hurt image quality.
  • SRO & SIs - Close to fully requested, need to check existing table, working through adding released scans
  • Parliamentary Reports and Sessional Papers - Identified https://www.google.com/books/edition/Sessional_Papers/onExAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0&kptab=editions https://www.google.com/books/edition/Parliamentary_Papers/ENsOAQAAIAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0&kptab=editions
