I am trying to reproduce the layout at :- Page:Chronological_Table_and_Index_of_the_Statutes.djvu/401

The index consists of a series of (sub) headings, under which there a series of topics.

4 levels of heading or sub heading have been identified.

The first level headings are in small caps (and represent broad subjects of interest)
The levels of heading below this, sub-divde a subject area-
The second level sub-headings are in bold, numbered conventionally,
The third level sub-headings are in italics, numbered with alphabetic sequence but bracketed.
The fourth level sub-headings are an italic number only (bracketed) next to the first topic of the sub-heading concerned.

Under each (sub) heading, there are a number of topics.

The first 2 levels of heading are flush with the left margin of the page.
The second, third and fourth level headings are offset from the left margin by a fixed amount, which increases by the same amount for each level of depth used.

Below each (sub) headings are a series of topics.

On the right hand side of the page for each topic is a list of statutes relevant to that topic.
The statutes are right aligned with respect to the page.

Topics can be nested.
A nested topic is offset from the left-margin by a fixed amount.
This nesting can be to more than one level.
The offset (from the left margin) increases by the same amount for each level of nesting.
This nesting does not affect the positioning of any statute list on the right hand side of the page.
Some topics use dittoed portions, when they only differ in respect of some words from an immediately preceding topic.

Some topic use bracing to clarify which statutes apply to which topic.(It is not intended to reproduce those on English Wikisource due to technical limitations.)

Some topics do not have a list of Statutes.
Instead a list of cross references other heading(s) or subheading(s), being provided.
In cross references:
First level headings are in smallcaps
Second level headings in bold (typically the number of sub-heading within the main heading)
Third level headings in italics, witihin in non-italicised brackets
Fourth level headings in plain, within brackets.

Some topics contain a "See Also" section. This is also a list of cross-references and the same formatting rules apply.
The "See Also" section is offset from the nominal left-margin of the list of topics by a fixed amount.
"See" and "See Also" are in italics.

Identified elements to be implemented:

  • Heading (first level), Heading (second level), heading (third level), heading (fourth level).
  • Topic (which can nest)
  • Statute
  • Cross-reference
