Copyright status of The Story of Integration of the Indian States in the United States[edit]

Hi! At Commons:Deletion requests/File:The Story of Integration of the Indian States by V.P. Menon.pdf, you said that The Story of Integration of the Indian States is PD in the US. Since the book is being worked on at Index:The Story of Integration of the Indian States by V.P. Menon.pdf, I'd like to upload it to Wikisource while it's not PD in India. What's your source for the book being published and not having its copyright renewed in the US? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk | contribs) 18:36, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@CalendulaAsteraceae: The front matter of the work in question says it was first published in March of 1956. I did a manual search of relevant volumes of the Catalog of Copyright Entries and found that The Story of Integration of the Indian States by V. P. Menon (1893–1965) was registered with the U.S. copyright office on 27 March 1956 (27Mar56; AI-5011). Since a U.S. copyright renewal has to be sometime in the 28th year, if the copyright was renewed it would have occurred in 1983 or 1984 (although when checking manual records checking 1985 is a good idea since the office sometimes was slow). Fortunately, unlike the registration, a manual search through the CCE editions was not necessary since the U.S. Copyright Office's records for 1978 onwards are online. I did a search of the online records to determine that the U.S. copyright was not renewed. I think you can do a local upload with a {{PD-US-no-renewal|1965|pubyear=1956}} copyright template. —RP88 21:55, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
