Is a millionaire; engaged in import business early in Meiji era; was thrown into prison on charge of having dealt with foreigners without permission; during confinement devoted lonely hours to investigation of Japanese art of "divination"; on being released, resumed business, country having been in meanwhile opened to foreign intercourse; was one of founders of Yokohama Gas Works; formerly President of Hokkaido-Tanko Rly. and other business concerns.
