 Every day into the great harbors of

America come shiploads of hopeful immigrants, eager to try their fortunes in this golden land of opportunity.

 Among the hopeful ones aboard

this ship, little Gretchen, fresh as the tulips of her native fields and green as the greenest grass that grows on the Holland dykes.

 Gretchen's father, who having

preceded her by several years, is still with childish faith, pursuing the fortune that has thus far eluded him.

 In the harbor, a mystery ship

that is supposed to be an innocent merchantman.

from the loved ones of the fatherland.

    American friends.

     is our Italian.

          Gretchen.

 Rogers, owner of the mystery ship,

is also at the party, having rented a room in the same tenement, for reasons of his own.

18 A budding romance.

19 "Carissima mia!"

 Widow Garrity's frugal meal is

not sufficient for so many hungry mouths.

21 "I am so hungry."

22 "She gived us all her cake."

 He promises that when

success comes, they can help all their neighbors.

 He woos her with her native

Dutch songs, sung in English with an Italian accent.

 The shop of father Jan, master

engraver, where he is struggling to build up a business.

 Rogers of the mystery ship pursues

the evil purpose for which he has become a neighbor of Jan.

27 "Don't be mad at your Pietro."

 "That's great work, Jan, you

ought to be engraving money for the government."

29 "I haf tried such a job to get -

   but I haf no friends."

 The Widow Garrity, fatally

stricken, is brought home from the factory.

 "Promise me, Gretchen, you

will watch over my children and keep them together."

 "I've seen my uncle, who is

superintendant of the mint and he says if you can engrave an exact copy of this he will give you a job."

33 "I vill do my best."

34 "Keep this quiet until I land

     the job for you."

 The plates finished, the

simple, credulous Jan turns them over to Rogers.

 "Thank you, my goot friend, if I

get this job it will mean much to my Gretchen and me."

 In a secret cabin aboard the

mystery ship, where Rogers and his gang of counterfeiters have been able so long to conceal their outfit.

38 "These are birds, Rogers!

Any gink will take these."

 Having found Jan so easy, Rogers

has now used the innocent Gretchen to pass one of the bills on the pretext of buying food for the Garrity children.

 "Here's another bill. Buy

the kids some toys - and bring me the change."

 "Vat means this? You haf fooled

me! You haf printed my plates - you are counterfeiter!"

 "You made the plates, she

passed one of the bills - you're both in with me."

43 "Vat does it mean? Vill we

     get arrested?"

44 "It's all right kid, no one will

         ever know."

45 "I vill tell the police."

 "You don't dare to tell! Because

you and Gretchen would be the first to go behind the bars."

 Jan has made good his threat

to inform the police, but has kept it from Gretchen.

48 A Sunday outing.

 Rogers, fearing that Jan 

will betray him, plans to prevent it.

50 Two confederates waiting in

     his room above.

 "The fake ambulance is at the

corner waiting. I'll be in the old man's room and when you see me wave my pipe, have Kelly on the roof give the signal."

52 "Pietro!"

53 "Papa!"

54 The signal that Jan has

     been doped.

 The plain-clothes man that Jan's

notice to the police has brought to the scene.

56 Little Micky suspicious.

57 "I'll ask your papa after

        supper."

58 Pietro tells his good news to

        his friends.

59 "Some men carried your

    papa away."

 While the ship awaits the

tide Rogers stays ashore as lookout.

 "Your father is all right. He was

tracked by the police and we sneaked him aboard the ship. He wants to see you."

62 "Oh, they've taken our Micky!

    Let's tell Pietro!"

 "The boss says get under 

sail and he will be aboard in ten minutes."

64 "Gretchen!"

65 "If you don't come,

   I'm going."

 "Mr. Rogers took Micky

and Gretchen to a big ship with sails."

67 At the docks.

68 The harbor police.

69 "Lock them in with the outfit."

 "The kids are crazy. This

is a coaster - our papers are regular."

 After the conviction of the gang,

through the evidence of Gretchen and her father.

 At the church of St. Ann.
