Woman of the Century/Rebecca Ruter Springer

SPRINGER, Mrs. Rebecca Rater, author, born in Indianapolis, Ind., 8th November, 1832. She is the daughter of Rev. Calvin W. Ruter. a well-known clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She passed her youth in New Albany and Indianapolis. She w.is educated in the Wesleyan Female College, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was graduated in 1850. She wrote much in youth, but allowed none of her productions to be published before she had grown to womanhood. The first of her poems to be known to the public was one which she read in college about the time of her graduation. She began to publish verses shortly after, and has since contributed to leading periodicals. In 1859 she became the wife of William M. Springer, the lawyer and congressman, and much of her time has been passed in Washington. D. C. She is the mother Of one son, Ester W. Her health has at times been poor, and she has traveled abroad REBECCA RUTER SPRINGER. to gain strength. She has published two novels, "Beechwood" 'Philadelphia, 1873), and "Self" (1881), and a volume of poems, "Songs by the Sea" (Chicago, 18901.
