VOLUME, when applied to the sound of an instrument or voice, is the quantity, amount, or fullness thereof. The word has acquired this meaning since the time of Johnson. In Rousseau's Dictionary, Volume is explained to mean Compass—'the extent or interval between the highest and lowest sounds.'
