Bort, neuter, ‘board,’ from the equivalent Middle High German bort; compare Gothic fôtubaúrd, ‘footstool,’ Old Saxon and Dutch bord, Anglo-Saxon bord, ‘board, shield, table,’ English board (see Bord). The Old Teutonic word bord meant the same as Brett, to which it is related by gradation; the apparent metathesis of re to or is Old Teutonic, as in forschen in relation to fragen; Brett, Bort may be represented in Indian as brádhas, bṛdhas.
