Rübezahl, ‘Numbernips, a fabulous spirit of the Riesengebirge,’ is a contraction of Middle High German Ruobezagel, ‘turnip-tail’ (Middle High German zagel is equivalent to English tail, Anglo-Saxon tœgel).
