Tarnkappe, feminine, ‘magic cap,’ see Kappe; the first component is Old Teutonic darni, ‘secret,’ Old High German tarni, Anglo-Saxon dyrne. To this Middle English dâren, ‘to conceal oneself,’ is allied.
