Wirbel, masculine, ‘whirl, vortex, whirlpool, bustle, crown (of the head),’ from Middle High German wirbel, masculine, ‘vortex, crown (of the head), whirl,’ Old High German wirbil, wirfil, masculine, ‘whirlwind’; compare Old Icelandic hvirfell, ‘vortex, English whirl.
