bägern, ‘to torment, plague,’ probably allied to Old High German bâgan, Middle High German bâgen, strong verb, ‘to contend, quarrel.’ Akin to Irish bágim, ‘I contend,’ bág, ‘combat’; hence the Aryan root is bhêgh, bhôgh.
