wüst, adjective, ‘desert, waste, confused, disorderly,’ from Middle High German wüeste, Old High German wuosti, ‘desolate, uncultivated, empty’; corresponding to Old Saxon wôsti, Dutch woest, Anglo-Saxon wêste, ‘waste.’ —
