bishop of Thessalonica; known for his hymns and sermons on feast days; often confused with the later poet Joseph the Hymnographer, and many works "by Joseph" are still disputed as to which of the two is the author; also known as Joseph of Studion or Joseph the Studite; brother of Theodore the Studite
