Identified reprints

[edit]

Tibbits published eleven books in two years, with tales and stories from many languages. It seems unlikely that he translated them all himself. Here are the sources that I've found so far (I've tried to find the first edition these stories were translated in, but it's at least as likely that may have found them from any of the times they were reprinted). They often seem to be edited to make them more streamlined (perhaps a skill he learned as editor of several local newspapers):

  • Folk-Lore and Legends: Germany
    • Lays and Legends of Germany (transcription project)
    • The Rhine, Legends, Traditions, History, from Cologne to Mainz (The Alraun, Fastrada, The White Maiden) (external scan)
  • Terrible Tales: German
    • German Stories (The Crystal Dagger, A Strange Bride) (transcription volumes: 1, 2)
    • Tales from the German (The Host of ‘The Sun’, The Goldsmith of the Rue Nicaise) (external scan)
    • Popular Tales and Romances of the Northern Nations (The Crazy Half-Heller) (transcription project)
  • Terrible Tales: French
    • Temple Bar (1872, 1871): The Mysterious Sketch (possibly), Lex Talionis (possibly) (external scans (multiple parts): 1, 2)
    • Chambers' Edinburgh Journal (1842): The Lyons Courier (external scan)
    • The Eclectic Magazine (1875): The Citizen's Watch (possibly) (external scan)
    • The Scots Magazine (1822): A Legend of Marseilles (external scan)
    • Stories of the Rhine (1872): The White and the Black (possibly) (external scan)
    • Can't find any originals for: The Weaver of Steinbach, The Cabalist, A Scene in the Desert, Cousin Elof's Dream

Terrible Tales year

[edit]

The Terrible Tales books don't have a publication date on the title page, etc. But this publisher's catalogue from October 1890 says they "are now ready". --YodinT 12:22, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
