Background[edit]

Anglican priest, but not an Oxbridge graduate. I have pieced together some background.

He is apparently the vicar of Thornley-le-Moor from 1871, and of North Otterington (these villages are in North Yorkshire, within walking distance of each other). [1] states he was of w:Queen's College, Birmingham, which is presumably his place of education ("Queen's was an exclusively Anglican institution and as much as seminary as a medical school", say WP). He is also listed (not with BA or other degree) as vicar of Clare, Suffolk in 1869 (w:St Peter and St Paul's Church, Clare).

The family is west Yorkshire, though: Harrogate area. A PDF Fewston Rediscovered at pp.19-20 gives four generations of Thomas Parkinsons: (I) died 1779, owner of Cragg Hall; (II) 1750-1816 of Cragg Hall; (III) died 1846; (IV) Thomas Parkinson of Clare, Suffolk. The first of these married Mary Pullein (Pulleine, Pulleyn, Pulleyne, Pullen, Pullan ...), died 1814 [2]. If the vicar's father died when he was a teenager, that might have had an impact on his education (he might though have gone to Durham University, I guess, before Birmingham?)

Anyway, Cragg Hall, previously Kildwick Hall, near Fewston, seems to have ended up at the bottom of a reservoir.

@Billinghurst:, I believe this is all the same person, and the writer. [3] connects the North Otterington vicar with the books. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:19, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles Matthews: A family states the father's details as

Thomas Parkinson
1783–1846
Birth 20 OCT 1783 • Fewston, Yorkshire
Death 1 MAR 1846 • Cragg Hall, Upper Cragg, Fewston
m. Hannah Wood, 1831, Fewston

though it doesn't quote sources. So no guarantee on accuracy.
