BOOK III.

Þā cwæð ic: Nū [þū] hefst^[1] þā cwydas geendod þe þū of^[1] ðisum twām bōcum ālēse, and næfst mē gȳt geandweard be ðām þe ic þē nū nīehst ācsode, þæt wæs, be mīnum gewitte. Ic þē ācsodde^[2] hweðer hyt, æfter þæs^[2] līchaman gedāle and þǣre sāwle, wēoxe, þe wanode, þe hyt ǣgðer dyde swā hyt hǣr^[3] dǣð.

G. Hū ne sǣde ic þē ǣr þæt þū hyt sceolt sēcan on þǣre bēc þe wit þā ymb sprēcon? Leorna þā bōc, þonne findst þū hyt þǣr.

A. Mē ne onhagað nū þā bōc ealle tō āsmǣaganne; ac ic wolde þæt þū mē.... þæt wuldor þāra gōdena, þæt heom þince heora silfra wite þē māre, forðām hī noldon^[4] be heora fædra lārum þā ylcan āre geearnian þā hwīle þe hī on þisse weorulde wēron. And þā gōdan gesēoð ǣac heora wītu, forðām þæt heom ðince heora āgnu^[5] þē māre. A. Gēa; genōh wel ic gelīfe þæt^[8] wē nāne wiuht ne þurfon forlǣtan þæs wīsdōmes þe wē nū habbað, þēah sēo sāwl and se līchama hȳ gedǣlan. Ac ic gelȳfe þæt ūre gewit weorðe myd þī swīðe miclum geǣced, þēah wē eall witan [ne] magen ǣr dōmes dæge þæt þæt [wē] witan^[9] woldon. Wē witon þæt hē is brādre ðonne se^[17] myddaneard, and þēah ne þincð ūs hwīlum þē bradder þe ān scyld for þǣre firlene^[18]. Nū þū hæfst^[18] gehȳred þæt wē nāðer nē myd þæs mōdes ēagan nānwiht ne magon of þisse weorulde gesēon eallunga swā-swā hyt is; ac of ðām dǣle þe wē hys gesēoð wē sceolun gelīfan þane dēl þe wē hys ne gesēoð. Ac ūs ys gehāten^[19] būtan ǣlcum twēon swā-swā wē of þisse weorulde weorðað, and sēo sāwle of þǣre carcerne þæs^[20] līchaman ālētan byð, þæt wē^[20] witon ǣlces þinges þe wē nū wilniað tō witanne, and micle māre þonne þā ealdan men, þā ealra wissestan on þisse weorulde, witan magen. And efter dōmes dæge ūs ys^[21] gehāten þæt wē mōten God gesēon openlice, ealne gesēon^[22], swylce swylce hē ys^[22], and hyne ā syððan cunnan swā georne swā hē nū ūs can. Ne byð ūs nǣfre syððan nānes wīsdōmes wana. Nele hē ūs nānwiht helan, sē þe ūs lǣt hyne selfne cunnan. Ac wē witon ðonne eall þæt wē nū wilniað tō witanne, ge ǣac þæt þæt wē nū nā ne wilniað tō witanne. Ealle wē gesēoð God, ge þā þe hēr wyrste beoð ge þā þe hēr beste bēoð. Đā answarede hē ān his^[23] āgnum ingeþancum and cwæð: Hwī wēnst þū þæt þā goodan forðgefarenan^[24] habbað fulne frēodōm and eall witon þæt hȳ witan lyst, ge on þissum andweardan lȳfe, ge on ðām tōweardan? Hwī^[25] wēnst þū þæt hȳ nabban nānege munde heora frēonda on þisse weorulde, ðe se yfela welega on helle tintregum ondrǣd hys frēondum^[26] þā ylcan wītu þe hē gearnod hæfde^[26]. Swā-swā sum rīce man on þisse weorulde hym habbe hys dēorlinga sumne fram ādrifen, oððe heora bēgra unwyllum hym sī fram ānȳd, and hæbbe ðonne monige wīte and mani ungelimp on hys wrēcsīðe, and [hē] cume þēah tō þām ylcan hlāforde þe hē ǣr myd wes, and sī þǣr micle ārlicor þonne he ǣr wæs.
