In 1908, Collier Magazine held a contest for the best English-language lyrics to the French song "Ô Canada" by Calixa Lavallée and Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Weir's lyrics did not win the competition, but were the most popular among the public. Routhier's and Weir's texts were both adopted (with some alterations) as the national anthem of Canada by the National Anthem Act (1985).
