O Canada was first written in 1880, with music composed by Calixa Lavallée and lyrics in French by Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Routhier's text along with Robert Stanley Weir's O Canada were adopted (with some alterations) as the national anthem of Canada by the National Anthem Act in 1985.
