חמם (חימום) m. (v. next w.; cmp. ~~~~~~, v. Sm. Ant. s. v.) amomum, an lIndian (also Syriac) spice. Ikts. III, 5 (some ed. incorr. חמס); Nidd. 51b חימות (corr. acc.); Sifre Deut. 107 חימום; Y. Erub. IX, end, 25d חכם (corr. acc.); Y. Hag. III, 79c חמה (corr. acc.). -- Gen. R. s. 45. beg. צריכה היא ה׳ (הימוס, corr. acc.) she needs amomuim (as medicine for sterility). Cmp. הימלתא, אמיתא.
חמם (b. h.) to be warm, hot; [of color) to be dark, red; (of taste) to be pungent, sour, bitterl. Part. חם, q. v. Pi. חמם to heat, iwarm, boil. Y. Ned. IV, 38c bot. לחמם ידיו את בו to warm his hands against it (the bread). Gen. R. s. 14, end הגוף מחממת keeps the body warm. Sabb. 40b וכ׳ ומההממתה and warms it (her hand) before the fire; a. fr. Hif. היחם same. Bets. II, 5 וכ׳ יחם לא one must not prepare warm water for &c. Nidd. 43a וכ׳ א׳ והדר אחמומי כל getting heated once and again immediately after. thpa. אתחמם, tthpe. איחמם 1) to warm ond'sself. Targ. Y. II Gen. XVIII, 1. - Sabb. 110b איח׳ כד ed. חמן m., pl. חמנים (b. h.; v. חמה) solar columns. [prob. a phallus, cmp. חניסנסיאl. Sifra B'har ch. IX, end (ref. to תקימו לא, Lev. XXVI, 1) וכ׳ הח׳ אלו that means the hammanim on roo-tops. Mekh. Bo, s. I (ref. o Ex. XII, 21) מחבניכם משכו withdraw from your h. Ib. Yithro, s. 5, end לח׳. Ib. s. 6 הח׳ מן (ed. Weiss a. br. everywhere ע״).

חמס (b. h.; v. Ges. H. Dict.10 s. v.) [to be heated, passiionate,] to insult, do violence, to rob. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 40d bot. וכ׳ חמוס אלא .. . סוף לא finally one does not. say to another man, Kill that man, but, Attack &c. Gen. R. s. 45 (ref. to המסי, ib. X VI, 5) וכ׳ בדברים את חומסני thou provokest me to speak harshly, because thou seest. &c. Ib. s. 65, beg. וחומסת גוזלת . . . מלכות the wicked government (Romme) robs and extorts; a. fr. -- Loev. R. s. 26i וחומסיו ודור דור each generation with its violent mer. - Part. pass. המוס. Ib. s. 30 אני ח׳ אני גזול I have been. taken by force, by extortion. Nif. נחממס to be ruined (cmp. חבל). Lam. R. to II, 6 וכ׳ מעיינה שנ׳ כגנה like a garden the spring of which has been ruined, so that its vegetables fade. Pi. חימס (of beasts of prey) to seize with fangs, scratch with nails. Gen. R. s. 4b (play on חמסי, v. supra) חימסה פניו Ar. (ed. בפניו, some ed. חימסא, incorr.) she scratched his face; Y'lamd. to Gen. l. c. (quot. in Ar.) אותו חיטטה כנמיה פניו וחימסה she scratched him and marked ihis face like a marten; Yalk. ib. 79 (not חומסה).
